CCTV Systems

Using the CCTV system for video verification of alarm events.

It is becoming very clear that the police will not attend burglar alarms unless they have been verified by video. For far too long police resources have been squandered on false alarms. It’s important to obtain all the video evidence possible in a short period of time to assist law enforcement to catch the criminals.

Use the right camera for the correct application.

Most cameras have the basic features infra light (IR) at night to provide a black & white image. Line cutting will produce a notification via email / SMS or just log the event in the recorded information to find it quicker on review. Sterile areas & time zones, again to find the imagers quicker on review. Then there are the anti-deterrent cameras who have two-way audio and flashing strobe lights when triggered by a line crossing. These cameras lay in wait using IR until they are triggered there by surprising the intruder.

The correct hard drives for the NVR.

The one thing commonly overlooked when selecting CCTV equipment is the hard drive (HDD) size within the Network Video Recorder (NVR). The size will depend on what cameras you have selected and for how long you wish to store the footage. A very rough rule of thumb is 1TB of storage per camera will normally result in 4 weeks of footage before that footage is over written. You can find formulars online that can calculate the exact TB required for the installation.

HDD storage and ability to store & supply footage if required for an incident to authorities and Workcover

Businesses have been threatened with false legal action claiming that the business has caused damage to a patron or their property in some way. Thankfully, a CCTV system can capture a clear picture of what has occurred and can be used to defend the business. The footage can be used to explain the business’s point of view. Many CCTV systems will only store footage for around 4 to 6 weeks after it has been recorded, so keeping regular back-ups can be highly advantageous in these situations.)

One App to rule them all.

One of the many reasons Hikvision is in high demand is their ability to incorporate all their products on to one platform using the same mobile app. No other manufacturer has achieved this. You no longer must install up to four different apps to achieve the same outcome. Your Alarm system; CCTV system; Intercom system & Access Control systems can all be at your fingertips 24/7.

Protect your CCTV system with a UPS.

Ok, you’ve just spent thousands of dollars having the best CCTV system money can buy installed. What happens when your power goes off due to an electrical storm or some workmen need to shut down the power for safety reasons. What happens? The CCTV system shuts down immediately and you lose the recording of all your expensive cameras. And you put your equipment at risk of an electrical spike which can destroy your NVR. The solution is to install a large enough uninterrupted power supply (UPS) to keep those cameras going and to protect the NVR from electrical damage.

CCTV systems are working to improve workplace health and safety.

Some years ago, I worked on a project to improve the safety of both workers and visitors to a large timber wholesaler who operates 24/7. Their main concern was forklifts hitting staff and visitors while they were busy loading and unloading trucks. We proposed installing robust cameras onto the front and rear of the forklifts connected to an NVR which through a 4G router connected them to the clients CCTV system. Of cause there were a number of other cameras installed all around the site, with line cutting and sterile areas programmed into them. CCTV is not just a crime deterrent it can also improve workplace health and safety.
